Today the Miami Redhawks confirmed that their all-time winningest coach, Charlie Coles died at the age of 71.
Coles was known for his success on the court, of course.
He has more Mid American Conference victories than anyone else in league history. His RedHawks made three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Plus, he has been enshrined in the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame (2011) and the Miami University Hall of Fame (1990).
However, he was equally known for his wit and grace.
Coles taught a course in basketball coaching theory throughout his tenure. Not to mention he gave interviews like this…
That discussion with Paul Keels on 97.1 The Fan took place before a 2011 tip against Ohio State that the Buckeyes won 69-40.
In the interview, Coles talks about how much Thad Matta means to him, and the feeling obviously is more than mutual.
Matta has released the following statement:
“Charlie Coles was one of the greatest men I have ever met. His passion and energy for life, his family, coaching and kids was contagious for all who ever came in contact with him. I owe so much of my life to him and will miss him dearly.”
The Buckeye basketball coach worked on Coles’ staff in 1996-97 when the RedHawks went 21-9, won the MAC regular season and tournament championships, and earned a spot in the Big Dance.
