In case you missed it, two Connecticut newspapers reported that Ohio State women’s basketball pursued UConn coach Geno Auriemma as part of their search to replace Jim Foster.
In fact, not just pursued, but made him their number one target and “basically threw a blank check at him in an attempt to lure him to Columbus, Ohio,” according to the Connecticut Post.
Both the Post and the Journal Inquirer say that UConn went through an intermediary, and no formal offer was made. Both papers also tie Auriemma’s reluctance to take the Ohio State job to his relationship to Foster, the man who gave him his start in coaching at St. Joseph’s 35 years ago.
In the end, Auriemma decided instead to sign a five-year extension with the Huskies that runs through 2018. At $10.86 million, the contract makes Auriemma the richest coach in the women’s game.
