SEC Speed?

The fastest men and women on the planet are on track to amaze fans at the 2012 Olympics.

The United States contingent of sprinters includes men and women from all across the country, but how many hail from SEC country?

Here’s the breakdown by place of birth…

And one each from Ohio, Oregon, Maryland, Michigan, Kentucky, North Carolina, New England, Illinois, Arkansas, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Mexico and Jamaica.

And one each from Ohio, Oregon, Maryland, Michigan, Kentucky, North Carolina, New England, Arkansas, Idaho, Georgia, Vermont, Pennsylvania and Kansas.

One note: Although not technically “sprints,” I have included the runners of the 800 and 1,500 meters, because they are still kind of fast, and their inclusion did not cause any state to leapfrog another in the above charts.

UPDATE: Heath Cline actually broadcasts from South Carolina, and he has a theory on these numbers. Heath’s a smart guy, and coming from SEC territory, you knew he’d be quick to come up with an answer.
