It’s been a competitive week for the young Blue Jackets players and prospects.
Center Boone Jenner, who was here last year as well, has been impressed with what he’s seen this time around as compared to this past season.
“I think it’s up a level, for sure,” he told me. “I mean, so many talented guys here and so many skilled guys and everyone’s working hard, so it always pushes you.”
It’s not the first rodeo for Ryan Johansen either, and he also feels like this week has been extremely productive.
“You don’t get these competitive practices with all these great players on one ice at a time back home in your town, so it’s nice to get out here and do these exercises.”
Speaking of Johansen and Excercises…
A lot was made of Johansen’s weight gain this offseason (including a debate at HFboards.com as to the proper use of the word “swole”).
However, Johansen admits he still has work to do.
You can hear what he said and see a portion of Johansen’s fitness testing in the video below.
More Than Hockey…
Blue Jackets Developement Camp aims to help players develop more than just their game. They have also met with the team psychologist, did leadership training with a Marine, are being given cooking class, and will feast on some home cooking when they have dinner at GM Scott Howson’s house this week.
We Know Who’s Really Big Time…
The boy band Big Time Rush is performing at Nationwide Arena tonight, and while members of the band didn’t need a pass to maneuver around the roadies, security personnel and bomb sniffing dogs, members of the Blue Jackets did. Yes, even our resident rock star, Cam Atkinson.
But Taking Center Stage Saturday Will Be the CBJ…
Saturday, the Blue Jackets campers will hold a scrimmage starting at 2 p.m. Johansen said the squad is so excited about it, it’s already become a topic of conversation.
“Should be a fun event for the fans, and I’m sure it’ll probably be our best turnout because it’s on the weekend,” Johansen said. “The guys are looking forward to that. They’re already talking about it.”
