There have been a number of reports coming out regarding the Illinois coaching search and the fact that the search now seems to be focused on Ohio coach John Groce.
However, the fact that Groce isn’t the first candidate contacted by the Fighting Illinis (he’s not even the second, third or fourth) has caused some to call the process an embarrassment. There are accusations that athletics director, Mike Thomas, knows a whole lot more about firing than hiring.
Some have even gone so far as to suggest there will be quite an uproar if Groce does indeed end up getting the job.
Other columnists from the Chicago area say it’s way too early to reach that conclusion.
As for why Illinois has had to go so far down their list to find a coach? ESPN’s Dan Dakich says it’s because there’s uncertainty at the school following the president’s resignation.
