Hardcore Math

I was (morbidly) curious. So I did some hardcore math. I calculated the goals per game, assists per game, and the average +/- per game of each returning Blue Jackets player.*

Here are the results…

Derick Brassard: Worse this year in goals, assists, +/-
Matt Calvert: Worse this year in goals and +/-, Improvement in assists per game
Derek Dorsett: Worse this year in assists and +/-, Improvement in goals per game
Derek MacKenzie: Worse this year in goals and assists, Improvement in +/-
Rick Nash: Worse this year in goals and +/-, Improvement in assists per game
Samuel Pahlsson: Worse this year in goals and assists, Improvement in +/-
RJ Umberger: Worse this year in goals, assists, +/-
Antoine Vermette: Worse this year in goals and +/-, Improvement in assists per game
Grant Clitsome: Worse this year in goals, assists, +/-
Marc Methot: Worse this year in goals, assists, +/-
Kris Russell: Worse this year in assists, Improvement in goals per game and +/-
Fedor Tyutin: Worse this year in assists and +/-, Improvement in goals per game

I caution against reading too much into these numbers because A) The Jackets are only 14 games into this season. B) Some stats, like +/-, can depend heavily on factors other than the quality of a skater’s play.

It was surprising to me to see that Kris Russell is the only player to see a bump in his numbers in more than one category. Overall, however, this does seem to confirm that none of the returning Blue Jackets players have improved substantially from last year, and the players the team is counting on most each seem to be experiencing the biggest drop off.

*Minus John Moore because of how few games he played in Columbus last season
